What are the diving seasons in Sri Lanka?
In Sri Lanka diving can be done all year round but the diving locations change. During the period between May and October (both months included) diving is possible in the east coast of Sri Lanka, during this period the south west Monsoon is active and the sea is rough in the west coast. During the period between November and April (both months included) diving is possible in the west coast of Sri Lanka,during this period the North east monsoon is active and the sea is rough in the east coast.
Are decompression chambers available in Sri Lanka?
Yes there are two decompression chambers in Sri Lanka, one in Colombo and one in Trincomalee (in the east coast) .At present only the Trincomalee facility is in operation.
What are the average diving depths in Sri Lanka?
The average diving depths in Sri Lanka very from 10m to 35m. For TEC diving there are ship wrecks and other special dive sites which are deeper than 40m.
Do I have to be a certified diver to dive in Sri Lanka?
Yes, but anyone can learn and get certified in Sri Lanka, if you don’t have the time to follow a diving course you can do a discover scuba dive (DSD) within half a day.
Do i have to be a swimmer to do scuba diving?
Yes you have to be able to swim at least 200m without fins and mask and be able to paddle in one place with your feet and stay at the surface for at least 10 min. If you are not a swimmer you can only do the discover scuba dive.
Can children learn scuba diving?
Yes, children over 8 years who are in good physical condition can learn scuba diving.
Are there strong currents in Sri Lankan waters?
Yes sometimes there are strong currents in some diving locations but the divers who are involved in diving in Sri Lanka are professionals who are aware of the currents and can avoid or take measures to escape these situations.
Are there dangerous creatures in the sea around Sri Lanka?
There are some poisonous fish like scorpion fish, stone fish, jelly fish and titan trigger fish which can be avoided if the diver dive carefully. Sharks and sea snakes are there but very rarely sighted.
